Founded in 1855, Evergreen Cemetery was initially formed from 25 acres donated by George T. Cobb, later Morristown’s first mayor. It expanded over the decades that followed, developing by 1911 into 78 picturesque acres that offered visitors “a scene of landscapes varied in interest and of extraordinary beauty.” A promotional booklet from that year now in MCHS archives captures views of the rolling hills, tree-lined drives, fountains, and classical monuments that made Evergreen a pleasant place to spend both an afternoon and eternity.
