Grant Funds Morris County’s First County-Wide Survey of African American History & Historic Sites

Morris County Historical Society (MCHS) has been awarded a $125,000 grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) through the Historic Properties Survey pilot program. The funding supports Morris County’s first-ever county-wide survey focused on African American history and historic sites, building on more than 18 months of foundational research and prior grant-supported work.

This project will help identify, document, and preserve historically significant places connected to African American communities across the county, while also supporting research, digitization of key resources, oral history collection, and public education efforts. MCHS is partnering with the Morris County Office of Planning and Preservation and the Morris County Heritage Commission, along with additional project partners and members of the local history community.

The survey is anticipated to be completed by June 2027, with programs and public updates planned along the way, including presentations, events, and digital resources highlighting findings as the work progresses.
