In 1910, Boonton’s Business Men’s Association, which was “composed of merchants and professional men” who “looked after the commercial and industrial interest of the town… and are ready at all times to furnish information to persons desirous of finding suitable locations [in Boonton] for residential or business purposes” published Boonton, Gem of the Mountain, a booklet bursting with civic pride. Inside were essays from citizens on various facets of the town from “A Commuter’s Impression” to “Attractions of a Home Seeker.” Also included was a firsthand account of Charles F. Hopkins, who as a teenager had assisted his father with ushering passengers on the Underground Railroad from their hotel to locations farther north (a story which is highlighted in our current exhibit, on display through 2026).

Interspersed among these fascinating accounts of local life are photos of Boonton from the time of publication, capturing a snapshot of Morris County town from the early 20th century:
