18 unique historic sites spread across Morris County from Mount Olive (West) to Riverdale (Northeast) to Madison (Southeast), each with its own fascinating story waiting to be uncovered.
About The Tour
Highlighting the 18 sites across Morris County that have received more than $1 million in taxpayer funds via the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust, the Historic Preservation tour recognizes the foresight of the Morris County Commissioners (then Freeholders) for establishing the Trust in 2002, thanks local taxpayers for funding the Trust, and recognizes the municipalities and non-profit organizations who steward these sites and buildings, making them available for the public to enjoy.

Former Baptist Church
The 1855 church building is associated with the settlement of the Mt. Olive area before the Revolutionary War and the emergence of the village of Mt. Olive from that time through the middle of the 19th century. The former Baptist Church has been certified as eligible for the New Jersey Register. The building contributes to the Mount Olive Village Historic District, which is listed on the New Jersey Register.

Seward House
The property has been traced to early West Jersey Proprietor ownership-Joshua Newbold. Following acquisition by Samuel Wills of Mendham in 1789 a stone house was built (now the kitchen wing). Around the time of the Civil War, and probably at the time of the wedding of Henry C. Seward the main structure was built. The prominance of the Seward family in the area, and the size and Italianate design of the building makes it the most significant home built in Mt. Olive previous to the 1900’s. The local farm was the leader in the area and the Seward formed a diary cooperative to improve the market availability.

Lake Hopatcong Station

Located in Landing, Roxbury Township, the Lake Hopatcong Train Station served thousands of summer tourists each year between 1911 and 1929. Replacing an earlier depot nearby, the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad put up this new, modern station in 1910-1911. Built in conjunction with the DL&W’s Lackawanna Cut-Off project, the final product served as a “showpiece” for both Lake Hopatcong and the railroad itself. In 2016, as an extension of the Morris Canal Historic District, the station was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
