Calling all photographers! Grab Your Cameras!
MCHS announces Historic Morris County, a juried photo contest, to celebrate the rich and diverse history of Morris County. The contest will be open for submissions from October 1, 2020 to May 14, 2021.
Bruce White, former staff photographer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Sotheby’s, will be serving as special guest judge. Mr. White’s most recent work, At Home in the President’s Neighborhood, (2016) was in collaboration with the White House Historical Association. He also served as principal photographer for their books The White House: Its Historic Furnishings and First Families and the 50th anniversary edition of the White House: An Historic Guide; and Tudor Place: An American Treasure.
An award reception in the in the Museum Gallery at Morristown National Historical Park will open the exhibit and entries will be on display starting June 2021. Date and time TBD.
Prizes will be awarded in each of the following categories and age groups. One entry per person.

- Young Adult (grades 6-12), entry fee: $5
- Adult (Post-High School): entry fee: $10
Submission Requirements:
“Historic” is defined as older than 50 years.
All photographs must be 8×10, matted and framed to 11×14 in a simple black art frames. Frames must be wired and prepared for installation upon submission to be considered.

- Contest Objective
This photo contest is sponsored by Morris County Historical Society, 68 Lafayette Avenue, Morristown, New Jersey 07960.
The Photo Contest is intended to support and encourage the use and enjoyment of photography while celebrating the rich and diverse history in Morris County, New Jersey.
- Eligibility
The Photo Contest is open to any amateur or professional photographer.
By submitting an entry to the Photo Contest, entrants represent that their participation in this
Photo Contest and receipt of any Prize under this Photo Contest, does not violate any applicable law.
- Entry Period
The Photo Contest begins on October 1, 2020 and ends on May 14, 2021. Entries submitted before or after the Entry Period will not be eligible.
- Images
Images submitted for the Photo Contest must have been taken by the entrant within Morris
County, New Jersey after October, 2018. The image must be the original taken by the entrant/photographer. The entrant represents that the image submitted has not been previously published or previously authorized for publication, except for posting on entrant’s personal electronic accounts. Entrant further represents that the image was not produced in violation of the privacy rights of the owner of the premises depicted in the picture.
Photographs may be taken with any camera or digital device.
All photographs must accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Photos the have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, filters, photoshopping, dark room techniques and reasonable adjustments to exposure, color and contrast, et.) will be disqualified.
TECHNICAL INFO & RULES
Entries may originate in any format — including, but not limited to digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints — so long as they are submitted electronically in a .jpg format. Multiple exposures that have been combined to produce a single “High Dynamic Range” image are acceptable.
All photographs must be 8×10”, matted (single plain white mat) and framed to 11×14 in a simple black art frame. Frames must be wired and prepared for installation upon submission in order to be considered eligible.

HOW TO ENTER
All images must be submitted via the official MCHS web site, and must be accompanied by all required fields, including name, email and other information about your photo submission.
Each image application must be accompanied by a the appropriate non-refundable entry fee, paid via Paypal or by cash, check, or credit card at the time of the entry as set forth below:
- Elementary (up to 5th grade) entry fee: Free
- Young Adult (grades 6 -12) entry fee: $5
- Adult (Post High School) entry fee: $10
MCHS reserves the right to reject entries for any reason. By entering, you indicate your unconditional agreement to, and acceptance of, these Official Rules and MCHS decisions, which are final and binding.
CONSENT OF USE
Entering of photographs constitutes consent for MCHS to publish and reproduce the photographer’s name and photo on the MCHS website or social media pages or in promotional uses relating to the Photo Contest. By submitting an entry, winners agree to allow use of his or her name, and/or photograph, for promoting this contest without compensation, unless prohibited by law. All photographs remain the property of the photographer and may not be used by MCHS except as described in these rules, unless proper ownership credit is given.
By submitting a photograph to enter the Photo Contest, the entrant grants MCHS a royalty-free, nonexclusive right to:
- Display the photograph on any and all MCHS website and digital publications.
- Use the photograph on the Internet and in social media to promote the contest.
- Use the photograph in MCHS’ internal and external communications materials including,
but not limited to, websites and web publications, social media, and printed materials and periodicals.
By submitting a photo you are agreeing that you own the rights to the photo and it is your own work and that MCHS has permission to use the photo on our website, social media, and other printed material.
EXHIBITION
All accepted works will be exhibited within the lobby gallery of the Headquarters Museum of Morristown National Historical Park, 30 Washington Place, Morristown, NJ 07960. MCHS will also be exhibiting accepted works on its website.
RECEIVING
Once you receive confirmation of Photo Contest acceptance, framed (and wired), securely wrapped, and labeled photos can be dropped off between 9am-3pm, Monday –Friday and 1pm-4pm, Sunday to Acorn Hall, 68 Lafayette Avenue, Morristown, NJ 07960. Unframed photos will not be accepted.
Contestant will be required to complete a Loan Form acknowledging:
- Formal release of the work
- Confirmation of ownership
- Guidelines determining abandonment of property
- Understanding of Official Rules and eligibility requirements
DURATION OF EXHIBITION
Historic Morris County will open June 2021.
Awards will be announced and presented at the formal opening of Historic Morris County, date TBD.
PICKING UP PHOTOGRAPH
In the event the entrant does not pick up his or her photograph within 2 months of the closure of Historic Morris County it will be considered abandoned, MCHS reserves the right to dispose of the photograph and frame at that time.
COVID-19 NOTICE
In the event a physical opening event and Exhibit is deemed to present a health risk, all accepted images will be displayed on MCHS website together with the identifying information regarding the photograph and the photographer.
JUDGING AND WINNER SELECTIONS
Photos will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, artistic merit and subject matter relevance to historic Morris County. Judging for Category Winners will be at the sole discretion of the Judge. All valid entries will be considered, and winners will be selected from each category and each age group.
- All judging decisions are final. MCHS will not respond to inquiries about the status of entries or judging.
- MCHS will contact winners by phone or email. If MCHS cannot readily find and contact an eligible winner for the prize, that prize will not be awarded.
- Potential winner may also be required to complete and return an affidavit of eligibility, including proof of age, residency and publication authorization.
ADDITIONAL
In the event that the operation, security, or administration of the Photo Contest is impaired or breached in any way, MCHS may, in its sole discretion, either: (a) suspend the Photo Contest to address the impairment and then resume the Photo Contest; or (b) award the prize(s) from among the eligible entries received up to the time of the impairment. MCHS reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who acts in a disruptive, deceptive or dishonest manner.
RELEASE AND LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY
By entering, entrant agrees to release MCHS, each of their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents (the “Released Parties”) from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of Entrant’s participation in the Photo Contest or receipt or use of any prize, including, but not limited to: (a) unauthorized human intervention in the Photo Contest; (b) technical errors; (c) printing errors; (d) late or undelivered mail; (e) errors in the administration of the Photo Contest; or (f) injury or damage to persons or property. Entrant waives the right to claim any attorneys’ fees and any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages.
MCHS will not be responsible for damage to or loss of any photograph or frame.
