Morristown’s Forgotten Past, “The Gilded Age” vividly reveals the surprising reign of a small New Jersey town as “The millionaire capital of the world” populated by Twomblys, Dodges,
McCurdys, Pitneys, Frelinghuysens, and philanthropist Otto Kahn. While Many of the grand mansions that dotted the local landscape have since been lost, John W. Rae and his son, bring
their sweeping tale back to life.
John W. Rae, a former newspaper feature writer, was originally from the Morristown area. After a 30-year career as a reporter, he became the Director of Public Information for Morris County. His son, John W. Rae Jr., who assisted in the book’s research, worked for the Federal Reserve Bank. Together they were members of Morris County Historical Society and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
